West achieves
Eagle rank

Jonathon West recently became an Eagle Scout, the highest advancement award presented by the Boy Scouts of America. He began his Scouting career as a Cub Scout then later a Boy Scout in El Paso, Texas. After moving to Illinois, he joined Troop 33 in DeKalb.

He has enjoyed participating in activities including camping, day trips, service projects and fundraisers. He has attended summer camps, first at Camp Dale Resler near Cloudcroft, N.M., and has spent the past three summers at Camp Lowden near Oregon, Ill.

To achieve the Eagle Scout Award, a Scout must earn 21 merit badges, serve in leadership positions, and complete a special Eagle service project, which involves a Scout planning, developing and providing leadership to benefit a school, church or community.

West's Eagle project involved refurbishing the outdoor sign area for DeKalb Wesleyan Church. Supervising a crew of boys, he was able to create a landscaped area surrounding the sign using brickwork, mulch and flowers. The sign lighting system was totally upgraded. His project made the sign more effective and the church grounds more attractive.

His leadership has included serving as instructor, patrol leader, assistant senior patrol leader and senior patrol leader. He earned 35 merit badges.

West is a junior at Dekalb High School.
