Eagle Scout Project Aims At Helping Kids

Published on July 5, 2012 by Gracie Mott in Coffee Talk

Jacob Marx, a Life Scout in Troop 33, DeKalb, is currently working on a service project to earn the highest rank in scouting; Eagle Scout. His project is to improve the children’s area for Feed’Em Soup Community Project. The Children’s program is a literacy based program that follows a theme during each session. The children participate in a story read aloud by volunteers and then are given a chance to create an art project or do a science experiment that relates to the book. Jacob hopes to transform what was once a table with crayons and coloring books into an experience that will inspire kids to learn.

Jacob plans to do his project in the memory of Lexi Weber, who was very passionate about her dreams to work with and help children. Unfortunately, Lexi died in a tragic traffic accident on February 21st, 2011. Lexi was a core member of Feed’Em Soup and was studying at NIU to become a teacher herself.

Jacob is currently collecting items in hopes that they will make a lasting effect on the children’ program. Some of the major items that are being searched for include storage cabinets and containers, educational handheld computers, educational toys and games, art supplies including paint and white construction paper, and science experiment supplies. There is also an Amazon wish list is connected to the Feed’Em Soup website under “Lexi’s Kids Corner”. Any new or gently used items can be dropped off at Feed’Em Soup in the box labeled Lexi’s Corner” or at an arranged pickup place.

Feed’Em Soup is a “modern day soup kitchen” which provides a meal, a clothing closet, a food pantry, Meals are served on the 2nd, 4th and 5th Wednesday of each month from 5pm to 7pm. Lexi’s Kids Corner welcomes guests during the same times.
